MANILA -- Authorities said Monday they rescued a 19-year-old college student from his classmates, who allegedly abducted him an demanded a P30 million ransom.

The victim, whom police identified only as Roy, was held for 2 days with his eyes and nose wrapped with packing tape. He was only given sips of water throughout the ordeal, said Movement for Restoration for Peace and Order chairman Ka Kuen Chua.

The police Anti-Kidnapping Group said it was the first time that the unit encountered kidnap suspects as young as 19. Four suspects were subjected to inquest proceedings while a fifth was tapped as state witness.

"Dapat makulong ang mga yan para hindi hindi maraming bibiktimahin, biro mo bata pa sila, mga 19 years old, nag-iisip na ng ganyan. Marami pang bibiktimahin ang mga ‘yan," said the victim's father, identified only as Marlon.

The victim was on his way home from school last Wednesday with his classmate, Jhulius Atabay, when 3 men grabbed them as they were about to board a bus and forced them inside a van, the AKG said.

Roy said the kidnappers pointed a gun at him and tied his hands and mouth with packing tape, but did not do the same to Atabay, who was later released.

The victim's father said he couldn't reach his son on his mobile phone after repeated calls.

At past 9 p.m., Marlon said he received a call from Atabay, who told him of the kidnapping and the suspect's P30-million ransom demand.

Atabay gave inconsistent details on the kidnapping and volunteered to bring the ransom to the kidnappers, said Marlon, who then sought help from police.

The AKG said it monitored Atabay’s whereabouts, who went to the house where Roy was held by his kidnappers.

Operatives arrested Atabay and 4 other suspects at the house. Six of their alleged cohorts remain at large.

The suspects claimed they held the victim as part of initiation rites.

The kidnapping appears to have been well-planned, said Chua.

"If it’s an initiation there should be no demand of money from the family. Since there is a demand for ransom payment, this is a positive kidnapping case," he said.

"I hope the government will take this seriously, pag-aralan mabuti, ipunin ang evidence and file a tight case against them para ma-avoid na maulit ito sa ibang estudyante," he added.
