DAVAO CITY- Smuggled goods estimated to be worth P14.8 million were seized by the Bureau of Customs at the Davao port on Thursday.

Used clothes (ukay-ukay) and counterfeit phones from China, Malaysia, and Canada were confiscated after these were found hidden in 11 shipments misdeclared as stuffed toys, blankets, and bags.

The shipments were consigned to Zainar General Merchandising, Al-Shaeer Enterprises, Suluans General Merchandising, and Mourpling Trading.

Two of the container vans which had smuggled clothes were at the Sasa Davao Port while the rest were at the Davao International Container Terminal in Panabo City.

Customs commissioner Isidro Lapeña reiterated that "ukay-ukay" is prohibited by law.

“Ukay-ukay has health issues, that’s why it is prohibited dahil hindi natin alam kung saan nanggagaling yung mga ukay-ukay na ito,” Lapeña said.

(We don't know where these clothes come from.)

The smuggled goods will be destroyed next week.
