MANILA - Baguio City Rep. Mark Go on Monday filed a bill seeking a 10-year moratorium on tree-cutting in the city.In a Facebook post, Go said he filed House Bill 7090, which seeks to safeguard the remaining 2.5 million trees in the city, of which, 500,000 are Benguet pine trees.“The cutting of trees in Baguio whether in private and public land is going to be prohibited for a period of 10 years except in cases where you have dead trees as well as infected trees that are beyond reviving or may pose danger to life and property,” Go said.Construction of any kind shall take into consideration the inclusion and preservation of existing trees in the design. Non-compliance shall lead to the non-issuance of a construction permit.Live trees that pose danger to life and property, as well as tree branches that encroach on power and utility lines, may be cut or trimmed in accordance with existing local ordinances, Go said.Any person or entity found guilty of violating the provisions of the bill, should it become a law, may face imprisonment between 2 to 6 years, or a fine of P100,000 to P300,000 for every tree, or both.The measure is said to compliment Go's 2 other bills, House Bill 6930 mandating parents to plant 2 trees for every child born to them, and House Bill 6931 requiring senior high school and college students to plant 2 trees as a requirement of their graduation.Both bills are already approved on second reading in the House of Representatives.- Reports from Rose Carmelle Lacuata and Maira Wallis, ABS-CBN News
