MANILA - Davao City 3rd District Rep. Isidro Ungab said Wednesday he accepted the endorsement of his party, Hugpong ng Pagbabago, to become the next speaker of the House of Representatives.

Hugpong, led by President Rodrigo Duterte's daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, endorsed Ungab as the chief executive's allies wrangled for the post.

Among those vying for House Speakership are Alan Peter Cayetano, Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez.

"I abide by the decision of our party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP). HNP is ready and open to work with everyone. HNP hopes that everyone will aim for and work towards unity and cooperation in order to establish a strong and efficient House," Ungab said in a statement.

"I reiterate my commitment to support the legislative agenda of President Rodrigo Duterte, ensure further economic growth, lower poverty incidence and to help create more opportunities for all Filipinos," Ungab said.

Earlier Wednesday, Hugpong said it fielded Ungab because Duterte, out of delicadeza, would not accept the intent of his son, Congressman Paolo Duterte, to lead the lower chamber.
