MANILA (UPDATE) - Former National Security adviser and long-time lawmaker Roilo Golez was laid to rest in Taguig City, Saturday morning in an intimate gathering among family and friends.

The late national security adviser's wife Natty, their son Parañaque City Vice Mayor Rico Golez and their daughter Guada, poured out their emotions during at the burial mass and interment rites held at the Heritage Park in Taguig.

"Sa bayan, may madali, mahirap na desisyon pero dapat laging pipiliin 'yung tama. Tamang desisyon kahit mahirap 'yan," the Parañaque vice mayor said in his eulogy as he recalled some of the best lessons he learned from his late father.

(For our nation, there will be easy, tough decisions but you should always choose what's right. The right decision, no matter how hard it may be.)

Though Golez was often seen as a serious man who advocated for the country's rights in the South China Sea, his son said the former national security adviser was also a family man and a doting grandfather.

He had a sense of humor that only the family gets, and he spoils his grandchildren, and spends lots of time with them, Rico Golez said.

A 3-volley salute and full military honors were also given to Golez for his service in the Philippine Navy as a Naval Captain.

Golez served as a congressman for Parañaque City from 1992 to 2013 and as a national security adviser from 2001 to 2004 during the administration of former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Golez died on June 11 due to cardiac arrest. He was 71-years old.
