MANILA — The mayor of Lapu-Lapu City in the Visayas area where COVID-19 cases are rising said Friday he tested positive for the virus.

Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan said he went on leave and got tested on Wednesday after he experienced fever. He disclosed the positive result in an online Independence Day speech.

The mayor said he had not developed symptoms of the disease and was quarantined at his home.

Neighboring Cebu City has about 2,500 cases of COVID-19 and overtook Quezon City this week as the area with highest count of the disease in the Philippines, according to ABS-CBN Data Analytics team's analysis of data from the health department.

More details to follow.
