MANILA - The Philippine National Police said Tuesday it has yet to establish any connection between the sudden proliferation of dummy Facebook accounts to the controversy surrounding the anti-terror bill.

Police are still investigating the proliferation of fake social media accounts, PNP chief Gen. Archie Gamboa said.

"Wala pa kaming definite na connection with those (dummy accounts) to destabilize the government," he said in a virtual press briefing.

"We still have to find out the connection kasi mahirap mag-conclude without appropriate basis," he added.

Fake accounts of university students and alumni, journalists, and even lawmakers were reported over the weekend, stoking worries among Filipino netizens.

Opposition Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan said the fake accounts targeted critics of the anti-terror bill.

Opposition to the proposed measure has grown online as Filipino netizens feared that the proposed measure may be used to jail anyone who criticizes the government.

The hashtag #JunkTerrorBill has also been trending online for several days.

The Department of Justice already ordered an investigation into the surge of fake social media accounts after the Anti-Terror bill protests.
