MANILA - (UPDATED) A committee of the Commission on Appointments committee Tuesday confirmed Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat, who is cracking down on alleged questionable deals in her department.

The CA plenary will need to approve the Committee on Tourism's decision.

Malacañang welcomed Romulo-Puyat's initial confirmation, saying it affirmed the tourism industry as an "important sector for economic development."

"We are confident that Secretary Puyat’s confirmation would give further impetus to the reforms she has spearheaded in the DOT," said Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque.

Romulo-Puyat took over from former Tourism Sec. Wanda Teo earlier in May after state auditors questioned a P60-million ad placement by the Department of Tourism on state television PTV-4 for a program that was produced by Teo's brother.

The new tourism chief also suspended a food tourism project called "Buhay Carinderia" after it was found out that Tourism Promotions Board COO Cesar Montano authorized the release of the full P80 million for the project even before it started. Montano resigned on May 22.
