MANILA - More than 680,000 families in Manila will get another P1,000 in cash aid from the city government on Thursday as part of its efforts to financially assist residents amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said that the second tranche of their City Amelioration Crisis Assistance Fund (CACAF) will include families from 896 barangays in Districts 4, 5 and 6.

The Manila public information office (MPIO) said the cash aid was initially for 607,000 families.

"However, with their updated master lists, the number of families recorded increased to more than 680,000," the MPIO said.

Moreno earlier said the first batch of cash aid has been released to more than 300 barangays in the city's District 1, District 2 and District 3.

Financial aid was also given to senior citizens, solo parents, persons with disabilities and students of the city-run Pamantansan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and Universidad de Manila, the MPIO said.

Food packs, rice sacks and milk assistance for senior citizens were also distributed in Manila.

Meanwhile, jeepney, tricycle, e-trike and pedicab drivers have been provided with 25 kilos of rice, it said. One rice sack was also given to each police officer under the Manila Police District, the MPIO said.

At least P5,000 worth of cash aid was also given to over 10,000 teachers and more than 1,000 non-teaching personnel working in schools in the capital.

More than 1,000 COVID-19 cases have been logged in Manila, which recorded the first infection in the country last January.

Due to the pandemic, employers and employees alike lost income after the national government placed Metro Manila under strict lockdown on March 15.

After two months of strict measures, the government ordered Manila, along with other cities in the capital region, to shift to a modified lockdown, which allows other "essential" establishments to continue operations to get the country's economy running again.

Kilusang Mayo Uno handout photo shows supporters putting up campaign streamers in Quezon City

MANILA — Progressive candidates have to contend with having fewer and smaller spaces to campaign in than traditional bets, labor leader Jerome Adonis said Sunday as he joined a motorcade in Quezon City to woo voters for the Makabayan coalition’s 11-person slate.

Adonis, Kilusang Mayo Uno’s secretary general and Makabayan senatorial candidate, distributed flyers and some posters to some residents along Balintawak on EDSA before the motorcade headed to Novaliches.

His supporters, wearing red, also gave flyers to those they encountered along the way.

“Kapag sikat, any place, available sa kanila. Pero sa mga Makabayan, lalong-lalo na kilala kami sa pagiging kritikal sa gobyerno, medyo sumisikip,” he said.

(Any place is available to those who are famous or influential. But for Makabayan, especially since we are known to be critical of government, space is a little tight)

He added: “Ultimo sa mga places ng pangangampanya ay lumiliit (Even the places for us to campaign are shrinking).”

Adonis said the motorcade will make stops at places where crowds gather so he and his team can meet people and discuss everyday issues like high prices and low wages.

“Ito lang ang means namin sa pangangampanya dahil hindi namin kayang sumabay sa mga mayayaman na political dynasty… Sa amin, importante na makausap at makadaupang palad ang ating mga kababayan,” he said.

(This is our only means to campaign because we cannot compete with the rich political dynasties… What is important to us is that we get to talk to and shake the hands of our fellow Filipinos)

Adonis vowed to continue fighting for labor rights, removal of contractual work in the private sector, and an increase in the daily minimum wage to P1,200 should he be elected senator.

He also promised to work to bring down food prices.

Among those who led the motorcade for the senatorial candidate earlier this morning include workers from the Nagkakaisang Samahan ng Manggagawa sa Regan-ADLO-KMU and the Samahan ng Manggagawa - Jardine Schindlers Elevators Corporation-ADLO-KMU.
