Former Negros Occidental Vice Governor Genaro “Lim-ao” Alvarez is replacing his daughter, outgoing Deputy House Speaker Mercedes Alvarez, in the House of Representatives.

Alvarez, popularly known in the province as “Lim-ao”, won over opponent Jackie Bilbao in the 6th District by a large margin.

He had 152,345 votes in the congressional race while defeated Bilbao only got more than 14,031 votes in the 6th District.

Alvarez, who had served as Board Member, representative, and vice governor of the province, believes that even if one comes from what is considered as political dynasty, a candidate will not the elections without the people’s trust.

Meanwhile, in ending her last term, outgoing Rep. Alvarez said she wants to focus on family. She said she would still be assisting her father in his political comeback.

“I’m very happy that of all people who will take over my place in the House of Representatives, it is my father who will replace me. He is my inspiration. He told me when I was a first-time congresswoman that politics is not an inheritance. Really, we had to make sure na everytime we get elected, you need to perform, to work,” she said.

The elder Alvarez was proclaimed by the Provincial Board of Canvassers along with Board Members-elect Valentin Miguel Alonso and Jeffrey Tubola.
