MANILA — The Department of Health on Thursday said it recorded 258 new COVID-19 cases in the country, bringing the total number of cases to 11,876.

Of the new cases, 188 or 73 percent are from Metro Manila.

Fifty-four or 21 percent are from other regions, and 16 or 6 percent are from Region 7 (Central Visayas).

The country saw a spike in cases in Central Visayas last week because of COVID-19 clusters in places like jails. However, the region's new cases have again gone down.

Metro Manila, Cebu City and Laguna province will be placed under modified enhanced community quarantine starting May 16.

The DOH bulletin also recorded 86 new patients who recovered from COVID-19, bringing the total recoveries to 2,337, accounting for close to 20 percent of the country's total tally of cases.

However, there were also 18 new COVID-related deaths that raised the total death toll to 790.
