MANILA -- Dinagat Islands Rep. Kaka Bag-ao has defeated another member of the well-entrenched Ecleo political clan -- this time in the gubernatorial race.

Bag-ao in 2013 was dubbed "dragon slayer" after defeating then Dinagat mayor Gwendolyn Ecleo in the race for the island's lone congressional district.

In her bid for the Dinagat's highest post this election, Bag-ao of the Liberal Party got 29,449 votes against the 26,705 votes of Gwendolyn's brother, Benglen Banglao, according to a partial and unofficial tally of 99.25 percent of election returns by the Commission on Elections.

Banglao belongs to the PDP-Laban party chaired by President Rodrigo Duterte and is a top leader of the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA), a spiritual organization founded by the late Ecleo patriarch, Ruben Ecleo Sr.

PDP-Laban's Nilo Demerey led the vice gubernatorial race with 27,706 votes against the 21,474 of Liberal Party's Caloy Eludo.

Gwen Ecleo, meanwhile, placed third in the race for the congressional seat of the third district, behind second placer Amor Alcaria of PDP-Laban and topnotcher, independent candidate Ailong Dela Cruz.
