MANILA - Reelectionist Sen. Sonny Angara cast his vote late Monday morning, seeking to extend his term for another 6 years.

The lawyer-turned-lawmaker and his wife Tootsy lined up for over 2 hours before they got to vote at Suklayin Elementary School in Baler town in the Angara family's bailiwick Aurora province.

Election day coincides with the death anniversary of Angara’s father, former Senate President Edgardo Angara, who passed away last year due to heart attack.

Angara, 46, is running under the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino, and is backed by the administration coalition and regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago.

Angara is among candidates with a statistical chance of winning the senatorial race, according to voter preference surveys by Pulse Asia.

In the May 3 to 6 survey, Angara landed on the 5th to 10th spot with a voter support of 36.3 percent.

Angara is gunning for his second Senate term with the campaign slogan “Alagang Angara” anchored on education and health care.

If reelected, Angara said he would push for a “Made in the Philippines” campaign that would strengthen the services and manufacturing sector, and dissuade Filipinos from working abroad.

Prior to his election to the Senate in 2013, Angara served 3 terms in the lower House as representative of Aurora province.
