COVID-19 cases in PH breach 11,000-mark

MANILA — The coronavirus infections in the Philippines breached the 11,000-mark on Monday as 292 new cases were recorded, according to the Department of Health.

In its case bulletin, the DOH said the country's cumulative tally of COVID-19 cases has reached 11,086 since its first case was reported on Jan. 30.

Of the new cases, 162 or 56% came from the National Capital Region, 74 or 25% are from Region 7 or Central Visayas, and 56 or 19% are from other regions.

For the past few weeks, Central Visayas, that includes Cebu province, has been logging a substantial number of new COVID-19 cases.

According to the ABS-CBN Data Analytics team, of the 162 new cases from NCR, 35 are from Parañaque, 23 from Taguig and 22 from Quezon City.

Of those from Central Visayas, 68 are from Cebu City and the rest are from other parts of Cebu province.

For the new cases from other regions, 48 are from Region IV-A, and 6 are from Region 3.

“The 7-day moving average line (in blue) shows that new cases are lower compared to early April. However, there is still no clear downward trend,” ABS-CBN Data Analytics Head Edson Guido said.

Meanwhile, the country recorded 75 new recovered patients, bringing the total recoveries to 1,999. This is the lowest in 9 days as the number of recoveries has been reaching 3 digits recently.

Only 7 new fatalities were reported, raising the total death toll to 726. The 7 new deaths is the lowest in 8 days.

Worldwide, 4.1 million people have been infected with COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus dashboard. Of those, 1.4 million have already recovered and 280,000 have died.
