CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Emano announced that his sister, Councilor Nadya Emano-Elipe, will run as vice mayor of this city.

Vicente Emano, their father who was supposed to make a bid for the position, died Tuesday. He was 76.

“Even if we already ran out of time to campaign [for Nadya], but we have to agree to the pleas of the supporters to push for the candidacy of Atty. Nadya Emano,” Yevgeny Emano said.

Emano-Elipe, who is in her last term in city council, had preferred not to run this year to support the candidacies of her father, incumbent Yevgeny, and husband Prexy Elipe, who is running as vice governor.

“I can never be my father, but I will try my best to serve the people, whom my father served for the longest time,” she said.

The Emano patriarch entered politics as town mayor of Tagoloan from 1980 to 1983. He was the governor from 1986 to 1995, then mayor of Cagayan de Oro City from 1998 to 2007 and again from 2010 to 2013. From 2007 to 2010, he was the city vice mayor.

According to City Commission on Elections officer Atty. Ramil Acol, any member of the family with the same surname can replace the deceased candidate. The replacement should also belong to the same political party.

The substitute candidate may file a Certificate of Candidacy with any Board of Election Inspectors, election officer or election supervisor until the mid-day of the elections day on May 13.

Emano-Elipe will be running against incumbent vice-mayor Rainier Joaquin Uy.
