MANILA - University of Santo Tomas has a new rector approved by the Vatican, student publication The Varsitarian reported Thursday.

The Holy See approved the appointment of Fr. Richard Ang, who became acting rector after his predecessor, Fr. Herminio Dagohoy, ended his term last Jan. 15.

The Master of the Order of Preachers (Dominican Order), Fr. Francisco Timoner, confirmed the appointment, The Varsitarian reported.

Ang reportedly topped three other eligible candidates for the position.

Timoner made the final appointment after securing the nihil obstat or non-objection of the Vatican, the UST school paper said.

The Dominican-run UST is one of the world’s largest Roman Catholic schools under the authority of the Vatican.
