Magnitude 5.5 quake jolts Occidental Mindoro

MANILA (UPDATE) - A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Occidental Mindoro on Saturday morning, Phivolcs said.

The quake occurred at 9:05 a.m. south west of the town of Rizal.

The temblor was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 6 kilometers.

Intensity 3 was felt in Lipa City, Batangas and in Malay, Aklan while San Nicolas, Batangas and Manila experienced Intensity 2.

The following areas experienced instrumental intensities:

Intensity 4:
San Jose, Occidental Mindoro

Intensity 3:
Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro

Intensity 2:
Tagaytay City
Malinao, Aklan
Sebaste and Culasi, Antique
Calatagan, Batangas

Intensity 1:
Talisay, Batangas
Dolores and Mauban, Quezon

Meanwhile, three low magnitude quakes were reported by Phivolcs shortly after the temblor.

The first one happened five minutes after the main quake south east of the same town at magnitude 2.3. It had a depth of 102 kms.

This was followed by a magnitude 2.6 temblor south west of Rizal town at a depth of 40 kms at 9:25 a.m.

The last quake, a magnitude 1.9, was recorded at 9:27 a.m. still south west of Rizal at a depth of 9 kms.

All were tectonic in origin.

Phivolcs said the last two recorded temblors were aftershocks of the main quake in the province.

Powerful quakes recently hit Luzon and Visayas: a 6.1-magnitude quake with its epicenter in Zambales, killing 16 people and causing heavy damage in Pampanga on April 22, and a 6.5-magnitude temblor that rocked Eastern Samar the following day.
