MANILA (UPDATED) — The Department of Health on Friday said there are now 8,772 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines after it recorded 284 new patients.

“130 o 46% sa mga kasong ito ay nasa NCR, at 116 o 41% ay mula sa Brgy. Kalunasan, Cebu City,” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said during a televised briefing.

(130 or 46% of these cases are in NCR and 116 or 41% are from Brgy. Kalunasan, Cebu City.)

Vergeire said that majority or 87% of the new confirmed cases are just from those two areas while the remaining 38 cases are from different parts of the country.

“Dahil dito, puspusan po ang pakikipag-ugnayan ng DOH sa mga LGU upang ma-contain ang virus sa NCR at sa mga closed-setting facilities tulad ng bilangguan sa Brgy. Kalunasan,” she added.

(Because of this, the DOH is closely coordinating with LGUs to contain the virus in NCR and in closed-setting facilities like the jail in Brgy. Kalunasan.)

Last week, there were already more than 200 COVID-19 cases in the Cebu City Jail and the number continued to increase.

The DOH also recorded 41 new recovered patients and 11 new COVID-related deaths Friday.

This brings the total number of recovered patients to 1,084 and the total number of fatalities to 579.

The number of new cases has remained within the range of 100 to more than 200 for the last several days.

More than 3.2 million people have been infected with COVID-19 from 187 countries, according to the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus dashboard. However, more than 1 million people have already recovered and more than 230,000 have died.
