MANILA - Carrying her resume in a plastic bag, 19-year-old Kate Francia patiently waited in line at a job fair in Naga City.

Francia, who recently finished senior high school, was among thousands of Filipinos who sought employment at various job fairs this Labor Day.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) last week said about 143,000 local and overseas jobs would be available for job-seekers at 50 Labor Day job fairs across the country.

Of this number, 58,171 are local jobs and 84,914 are postings abroad.

"Parang pag-take ko as a challenge po," said Francia, who plans to take up education in college while working.

"Sabi nga po, experience is the best teacher," she added.

Charrie Ann Margallo, who recently finished her education degree, was also among those who sought employment at a job fair.

Margallo, who was eyeing an entry-level job as a cashier at the fair at the Tacloban City Convention Center, was elated upon getting hired under a government internship program.

"I came here for nothing but God has a plan for me, which is why I was hired on the spot," she said in the vernacular.

Aside from the usual job fairs, business and livelihood fairs were also held in other parts of the country such as Davao City and Butuan City.

The Department of Trade and Industry and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority held seminars to help those interested in starting their own business.

The agencies taught baking and handicraft-making as some of the means to earn income.

On Labor Day, President Rodrigo Duterte's office announced that he has signed an executive order stopping illegal contractualization.

He vowed that his government would "never cease in its effort to provide Filipino workers with dignified and meaningful employment."
