MANILA - Jeepneys will only board up to 10 passengers under the new normal of physical distancing to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, a transport group leader said Thursday.

Pasang Masda president Obet Martin said a jeepney usually loads up to 22 passengers at maximum capacity.

"Kung magkakaroon po tayo ng social o physical distancing, papaano po 'yan eh 10 lang po ang maisasakay. 'Di rin sasapat po ang kikitain namin," he told DZMM.

He added that financial aid should still be given to jeepney drivers under the new normal in order to sustain their needs.

"Hihingi po kami ng ayuda sa ating pamahalaan sapagkat matatalo po kami sa krudo," he said.

The transport leader said they have yet to finalize the protocols on transportation under the new normal with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board and the Department of Transportation.

Under the new normal, public transportation will resume but will operate on a reduced capacity. All ports and airports, meanwhile, will be open for transportation of goods.

The new normal is equivalent to a general community quarantine starting May 1, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said in a briefing Friday, which is still subject to changes based on government monitoring.
