A newborn baby in Cebu City has tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Department of Health (DOH) in Central Visayas said Tuesday.

The newborn is among the 7 new cases in Cebu City recorded Tuesday.

The DOH said the baby's mother was showing symptoms of COVID-19 during labor. The woman later tested negative for the illness.

The DOH is still investigating how the baby was infected. It is also urging pregnant women to do precautionary measures to avoid contracting the virus.

The newborn has been admitted in a hospital.

There are 203 cases of COVID-19 in Central Visayas, as of Tuesday. Cebu City has the highest number with 173, followed by Lapu-Lapu City with 13 cases, and Mandaue City with 9 cases.

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella earlier disclosed that 2 of the 7 new cases are inmates in the city jail.

The city is now implementing strict measures in all barangays. One village, Barangay Luz, is under lockdown because it has the most number of cases in the city.
