MANILA - The Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) on Friday apologized for the presence of Irene Marcos during the launch of the campus' creative hub and announced that its director has resigned.

In a statement, ADMU President Fr. Jose Ramon Villarin said he has accepted the voluntary resignation of Yael Buencamino, executive director of Arete Amphitheater.

Buencamino earlier confirmed that Marcos, the third child of the late dictator Ferdinand and wife Imelda, was invited to the event, according to ADMU's student council.

The student council had called Marcos' presence a "mockery" and a "grave insult" to martial law survivors, prompting an apology from the school administration.

Villarin acknowledged that Marcos' presence during the launch had "cast doubts" on the university's solidarity with martial law victims.

"We offer our deepest apologies for the hurt this has brought," Villarin said.

"It is my hope that, as an open community of learners, we learn from our missteps. I call on the University community to hold fast to our commitment to justice and peace, and to help one another remain vigilant, especially during this time of forgetfulness."
