MANILA (UPDATE) — The Department of Health on Wednesday announced 227 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the country's total to 2,311.

It also reported 1 newly recovered patient and 8 new deaths.

Of the 2,311 cases, there are now a total of 50 recoveries and 96 fatalities.

The additional recovered patient is PH179, a 59-year-old Filipino male from Taguig City with no travel history. He experienced symptoms on March 11, tested positive for COVID-19 on March 16, and was discharged on March 29 after receiving 2 negative test results.

Meanwhile, all 8 new fatalities are senior citizens. The youngest was 65 years old, and the oldest was 84 years old.

Seven of the 8 have pre-existing medical conditions. Their details are as follows:

• PH692, an 80-year-old Filipino male from San Juan City with no travel history. The patient, who has hypertension, tested positive for COVID-9 on March 25. He died on March 30 due to pneumonia and COVID-19.
• PH1723, a 70-year-old Filipino male from Cebu City with unknown travel and exposure history. He had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and coronary artery disease. He tested positive on March 28, the same day he died due to respiratory distress syndrome with multiple organ failure secondary to COVID-19 infection.
• PH1039, an 84-year-old Filipino male from Mandaluyong City with no travel history. He tested positive for COVID-19 on March 25 and died on March 28 due to pneumonia and COVID-19.
• PH621, a 77-year-old Filipino male from Manila with no travel history. The patient, who had prostatic cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tested positive on March 24 and died on March 29 from septic shock, pneumonia and COVID-19.
• PH1811, a 66-year-old Filipino male from Paranaque City with unknown travel history. He had hypertension and was only confirmed as a COVID-19 case on March 28, five days after he died from acute respiratory failure and pneumonia.
• PH1299, a 73-year-old Filipino male from Pasig City with unknown travel history. He had myocarditis, diabetic ketoacidosis, acute kidney injury and hypertension. He was only confirmed as a COVID-19 case on March 25, four days after he died from acute respiratory failure, sever acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), septic shock, and pneumonia secondary to COVID-19.
• PH415, a 79-year-old Filipino female from Makati City with unknown travel history. The patient, who had hypertension and hyperthyroidism, tested positive on March 22 and died on March 28 due to ARDS secondary to pneumonia and COVID-19.
• PH1089, a 65-year-old Filipino female from Quezon City with no travel history. She had diabetes and cardiac disease and was only recorded as a COVID-19 patient on March 27, five days after she died due to ARDS and pneumonia.

As of Wednesday, the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus dashboard has recorded more than 860,000 COVID-19 cases around the world. Of that number, 178,000 have recovered and more than 42,000 have died.

Since March 16, the Philippine island of Luzon has been on lockdown with public transportation and other services suspended in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19.
