The younger Duterte told his father that one day, he would be proud of him. He also wished him more patience.

The former Vice Mayor had resigned from his post on Christmas Day last year, citing "recent unfortunate events in my life that are closely tied to my failed first marriage."

Former President and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo also greeted Duterte a happy birthday, thanked him for "years of real friendship," and wished him good health and fortitude.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque also greeted Duterte, who he called "the father of the nation." Roque said he considers working with Duterte a privilege.
