MANILA (2nd UPDATE) - A policeman was shot dead on Tuesday afternoon on the southbound side of EDSA Connecticut, authorities said.

The victim was identified as Police Senior Master Sgt. Solomon Cugay of the National Capital Region Police Office.

Eastern Police District director Police Brig. Gen. Christopher Tambungan said a motorcycle-riding assailant shot the officer.

The victim may have come from the Philippine National Police headquarters in Camp Crame close by before the incident, Tambungan added.
