MANILA (2nd UPDATE) - Five people were killed and 10 were wounded after their vehicle flipped over while passing through an elevated portion on the northbound side of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) in Apalit, Pampanga around noon Saturday.

Police Lt. Col. Elmer Decena of the Apalit police said 15 people were on board the van at the time of the incident. Eight of them plunged into a residential area in Barangay Tabuyuc in Apalit town, he said.

Apalit's Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said 13 of the passengers were overseas Filipino workers who were about to catch their flights at the Clark International Airport bound for the Middle East.

Five road crash victims were rushed to the JBL Memorial Medical Center while the others are scattered in Pampanga Premier Medical Center and ASCCOM Medical Center.

Relatives have yet to arrive from Manila and some from the provinces.

Dr. Roden Mariano, surgery resident of JBL Memorial Medical Center, said one of the victims was in critical condition earlier but is now stable.

“Noong ininterview po namin karamihan sa kanila tulog habang nagbabyahe sa sasakyan," Mariano said.

According to the NLEX Traffic Control Center, one of the van's tires blew out, causing the vehicle to flip and roll over the lanes of the NLEX viaduct.

Traffic in NLEX is already back to normal, authorities said.

The rescue team has yet to locate one more victim.

“May hinahanap kaming isa na tumawag ang agency nila nagbigay ng pangalan ang gamit niya nasa amin lahat, kami may incident report siya na lang ang hinahanap namin," Apalit MDRRMO rescue officer Jefferson Cuico said.
