Some individuals who still have to report for work might have to walk to their offices after an enhanced community quarantine in Luzon shuttered modes of public transport to arrest the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the head of the Metro Manila Mayors Council (MMMC) said Tuesday.

The total lockdown from March 17 to April 12 imposes a home quarantine on all households. It exempts establishments offering basic services and goods like banks and supermarkets, as well as health workers, government officials and the press, according to a memorandum from Malacanang.

Workers in "essential establishments" have to show their company IDs if flagged by authorities, said MMMC chairman Paranaque Mayor Edwin Olivarez.

"Iyong iba maglalakad po talaga," he told radio DZMM.

(Some people will really have to walk.)

"Ang mangyayari po talaga, sakripisyo po para sa lahat sa 'tin dito para ma-contain natin itong virus," he added.

(We will all really have to sacrifice to contain this virus.)

Olivarez also urged employers to provide workers with temporary lodging close to essential establishments.

The Philippines has confirmed 142 cases of the novel coronavirus, including 12 deaths and 3 patients who recovered.
