(UPDATE) The helicopter carrying Philippine National Police Chief Gen. Archie Gamboa and 7 others crashed in San Pedro City, Laguna on Thursday morning after it got tangled with power lines shortly after takeoff, officials said.

Gamboa was accompanied by Major Generals Jovic Ramos and Mariel Magaway, his comptrollership and intelligence heads, respectively; Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac, the PNP spokesman; an aide, a technician and 2 pilots.

The area where the helicopter took off was sandy and the chopper's propellers fanned the debris, creating poor visibility, according to Police Lt. Chit Gaoiran, spokesperson of PNP Calabarzon.

The helicopter was on its way to Camp Vicente Lim in Calamba City, Laguna when the accident happened, according to PNP deputy chief for operations Major Gen. Guillermo Eleazar.
