COTABATO CITY (UPDATE) – A National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) tower in Kabacan, North Cotabato was partially damaged by an explosion on Tuesday.

The damage to NGCP Tower 138 in Sitio Kalakat, Barangay Kayaga was caused by an improvised explosive device, authorities said.

Officers from the Kabacan police, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, the police’s Provincial Public Safety Company, and troops from 7th Infantry Battalion conducted safety procedures in the area a day after the blast, as the damage was not noticed until later.

The EOD team recovered 1 NOKIA 1060D cellphone, 1 9-volt power flash battery, 1 explosive believed to be a 60MM mortar shell, and 1 set relay and leg wire.

All items were brought to the Cotabato Provincial Police Office for further investigation and proper disposition.

"Iniimbestigahan pa namin iyon, kasi hindi namin makita [ang motibo] except for extortion…kasalukuyan na nagtatanong iyong mga personnel ko doon para malaman kung sino iyong mga pumunta doon days before nalagyan iyon ng IED," said Lomas-e.
