Vice President Leni Robredo and former senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. File/Composite

MANILA - The Presidential Electoral Tribunal has denied Vice President Leni Robredo's petition to dismiss former senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s protest, the ex-lawmaker's office said Thursday.

Marcos' office released a copy of a January 24 resolution by the PET. He is contesting his defeat to Robredo in the May 2016 elections by roughly 200,000 votes.

The tribunal rejected Robredo's arguments that it had no jurisdiction over the case and that Marcos' complaint lacked form and substance.

While the sufficiency of the protest was affirmed, the tribunal said "nothing yet has been proved."

"The protest is only sufficient for the tribunal to proceed and give the protestant (Marcos) the opportunity to prove his case in accordance to 2010 PET rules," the body said.

It also denied Marcos' petition to exclude Robredo's answer to the protest, saying it was filed within the prescribed period, contrary to his argument.

Marcos' lawyer, Victor Rodriguez, said the decision meant that the case would move forward.

"We just want the truth to come out. Its that simple," he said in a statement.
