MANILA - A work from home option should be extended to employees to further protect the public from possibly contracting the 2019 novel coronavirus, Sen. Risa Hontiveros said Tuesday.
Companies should prioritize their employees' health, Hontiveros said in a statement.
"Kung hindi naman kailangang mag-commute ang empleyado araw-araw, mas mapapangalagaan ang kalusugan nila kapag puwedeng magtrabaho sa bahay," she said.
Employees whose nature of work require them to be present at the work place should receive protective equipment from their employers, the senator said.
"Dapat may access sa running water, sabon, alcohol, at hand sanitizer ang mga empleyado sa loob ng pagawaan, lalung-lalo na sa mga empleyadong nasa frontline at nasa maraming tao. Kailangang i-provide ng kompanya ang mga mahahalagang gamit kagaya ng mask at alcohol," she said.
A new coronavirus strain, which originated in Wuhan, China, has killed nearly 1,000 people in less than 2 months. It has infected at least 40,000 others, mostly Chinese.
The Philippine government has suspended flights to and from China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan to stop the entry of individuals who are possible carriers of the deadly virus.
