MANILA - A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck off Surigao Del Norte province on Sunday, the state seismology office said.

The tremor is an aftershock of the magnitude 5.9 quake that rocked the southern province on Friday night, Phivolcs said.

Sunday's tectonic quake hit past 6 a.m. at a depth of 44 kilometers. Its epicenter was located 42 kilometers east of of General Luna, said Phivolcs.

Instrumental Intensity 1, it said, was recorded in neighboring Gingoog town in Misamis Oriental, as well as Cebu City.

The tremor was not expected to spawn aftershocks or major damage, Phivolcs said.
