Magnitude 6.1 quake strikes off southern Mindanao

MANILA (UPDATED) - A 6.1-magnitude undersea earthquake struck off southern Mindanao Thursday evening, followed by a moderately strong aftershock, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the first tectonic tremor struck at 9:40 p.m. approximately 118 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos town in Davao Occidental with a depth of 20 km.

It was first measured at 6.4 magnitude before being revised to 6.1.

An aftershock measuring 4.6 magnitude followed 5 minutes later that struck around 118 km southeast of the same town with a depth of 3 km.

Intensity IV was felt in Glan, Sarangani, while Intensity III was felt in Davao City, General Santos City and Alabel town in Sarangani. Intensity II was also felt in Magsaysay town, Davao Del Sur.

Here are the areas that experienced instrumental intensities during the 6.4-magnitude earthquake:

  • Intensity IV - Malungon town, Sarangani
  • Intensity III - Alabel town, Sarangani
  • Intensity II - Kiamba, Sarangani; Koronadal City and Tupi, South Cotabato; General Santos City
  • Intensity I - Kidapawan City

Aftershocks are expected, Phivolcs said.
