MANILA - Fixer Mark Ruben Taguba II on Thursday said he will consult his lawyers about turning state witness, following his arrest in connection with a P6.4 billion shabu haul that slipped past port inspections last year.

"Pag-iisipan namin siguro ng attorney ko ito. Itatanong ko sa kaniya," Taguba told reporters.

(My attorney and I will probably consider this. I will ask him about it.)

Taguba allegedly acted as middleman in the shipment of the drug haul from China in May 2017.

During a Senate investigation into the issue, he named Customs officials who supposedly accepted bribes, including a group allegedly backed by President Rodrigo Duterte's son, resigned Davao City vice mayor Paolo Duterte. The younger Duterte has denied the allegation.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested Taguba on Wednesday after the Department of Justice filed drug trading charges against him and other middlemen.

A court needs to dismiss the non-bailable charge before Taguba can become a state witness.

Taguba said he was confident of victory in his case even if the court rejects him as a state witness. "Inosente naman tayo," he reasoned. (We are innocent.)

He added that he had no regrets in baring the alleged corruption inside the Bureau of Customs, but declined to comment on whether or not charges should be filed against other individuals.

No Customs employee faced raps over the shabu shipment, the agency has confirmed.

Tracking teams are now working on the arrest of Taguba's co-accused, NBI Deputy Director for Intelligence Vicente De Guzman said in a press conference.

Taguba will be detained at the NBI headquarters pending further court orders, said De Guzman.

The fixer is facing a separate tax evasion case.
