MANILA -- Damage wrought by storm Usman in Oriental Mindoro led authorities to place 8 towns under a state of calamity, the provincial governor said Thursday.

Heavy rains spawned floods that damaged drainage projects and crops in the towns that were placed under a state of calamity. These areas include the capital city of Calapan and the towns of Baco, Naujan, Socorro, Pinamalayan, Bansud, Pola and Bongabong, said Governor Alfonso Umali.
