MANILA -- Damage wrought by storm Usman in Oriental Mindoro led authorities to place 8 towns under a state of calamity, the provincial governor said Thursday.

Heavy rains spawned floods that damaged drainage projects and crops in the towns that were placed under a state of calamity. These areas include the capital city of Calapan and the towns of Baco, Naujan, Socorro, Pinamalayan, Bansud, Pola and Bongabong, said Governor Alfonso Umali.

The initial cost of damage to agriculture in the province alone was estimated at P105 million, he told radio DZMM.

Three roads in Naujan remained impassable due to floods, he said.

The storm left at least 86 people killed, 43 injured and 19 missing as of Thursday, the national disaster council said.

Usman is emerging as one of the deadliest storms of 2018 along with Super typhoon Ompong (Mangkhut), which killed 82 people according to an official count or as many as 100 according to an Agence France-Presse tally.
