1 dead, 4 hurt in Davao City construction mishap

MANILA, Philippines - A portion of an escalator of a building under construction in Davao City collapsed Saturday morning, killing a worker and injuring 4 others.

Senior Inspector Ronald Lao, chief of the Sta. Ana district police station, said a group of construction workers were pouring cement on the building's 4th floor when the escalator collapsed around 7 a.m..

Lao said a worker identified as Crispin Desalisa died. He identified the injured workers as Renewils Balorio, Marciano Polbo, Jimmy delos Santos and Joy Rey Suson.

"May apat na injured doon at isang patay, natabunan," the police chief said.

Meanwhile, Lao said that responding policemen and a rescue team of the local government forcibly entered the site after they were were barred by security guards from entering.

"Siyembpre nag-force kaming pumasok kasi unang-una na-interview namin ang ibang biktima na may natabunan daw. Baka masagip pa natin. Tumawag din ang 911 na hindi sila pinapasok," the police chie said, adding that they could have saved Desalisa if they were immidiately allowed to enter the construction site.

The city government has ordered the contractor, DDT Konstract, to temporarily halt the construction while the case is being investigated by police. – Ad Roel Alcober, ABS-CBN Davao
