MANILA – The death toll from the accident during a student field trip in San Miguel, Bulacan last Tuesday rose to 7 after the remains of the last fatality was found.

A child found the body of Maiko Bartolome beneath logs on the riverbank. Bartolome is the last of the 7 students who drowned while crossing Madlum River in Barangay Sibul last Tuesday.

The bodies of students Mikhail Alcantara, Phil Rodney Alejo, Michelle Ann Rose Bonzo, and Helena Marcelo were recovered on Tuesday afternoon. The following day, the remains of Jenette Rivera and Madel Navarro were found.

Two other students who also crossed the river, identified as Daniel Cunanan and Thea Hernandez, survived.

The Bulacan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) said the sudden swelling of the river may have been triggered by the heavy downpour over Mt. Manalmon.

The victims were among a group of BSU students on board four buses who went to Madlum Cave in Barangay Sibul for a field trip.

Due to the incident, the mayor of San Miguel town temporarily closed the tourist spot. - reports from Raia Capulong, ABS-CBN News; Jake Morales, dzMM; Kori Quintos, ABS-CBN News
