VIRAL: Photos of young boy studying on sidewalk

MANILA - The photos of a young boy studying along a sidewalk in Cebu is now making the rounds online.

The photos, taken and posted on Facebook by student Joyce Torrefranca, show Daniel Cabrera reading and writing on a book on top of a wooden bench.

The boy is seen sitting on his legs along the sidewalk, outside a branch of fast food chain Mcdonald's.

"For me as a student, it just hit me a lot, like big time," shared Torrefranca. "I seldom go to coffee shops to study. And then this kid, he doesn't have anything but he has dedication to study."

ABS-CBN News found the nine-year-old Cabrera in a nearby eatery, where his mother and sibling work.

The Cabrera family has no permanent home since their house was destroyed by fire.

Every night, Cabrera, who is a Grade 3 student, patiently studies under the lights of the nearby fast food chain branch.

He said despite their current situation, he is determined to finish his studies to be able to help his family. His mother is already a widow and one of his siblings is sick, he said.

A teacher of Cabrera, Rosalina Detuya, is impressed by the boy's perseverance.

"Masayang bata din si Daniel. Matalino din siya. Sumasagot talaga siya during class discussion, participative talaga siya," Detuya said.

After the photos have gone viral, the local social welfare officer visited the Cabrera family to know what assistance it can offer to the boy and what livelihood assistance it can give to his mother. -- Report from Joworski Alipon, ABS-CBN News Central Visayas
