MANILA - Former Batangas Governor Jose Antonio Leviste voluntarily surrendered at the Sandiganbayan on Friday and posted bail for his malversation charge over his alleged unliquidated cash advances for trips abroad.

Leviste was accused of taking, misappropriating and embezzling P151,853.42 in cash advances for his personal use from the funds released for his foreign travels when he was chairman of the Philippine Retirement Authority's board of trustees in 2003.

No warrant of arrest has been issued to Leviste, but he already paid a P40,000-cash bond in exchange for his temporary liberty.

Leviste denied having unaccounted cash advances, saying the case is politically motivated.

"That thing is ridiculous because a person's travel allowance is $300 for hotel, food and transportation. Ano pang nanakawin mo ron?" he said.

"Truth of the matter is, records show I have P2 million not yet reimbursed by the government for me for the Philippine Retirement Authority which I resuscitated and pulled out from doldrums in 2001."

In 2009, Leviste was sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of his long-time friend and aide Rafael de las Alas. He left the New Bilibid Prison in 2013 after securing a parole.
