MANILA-- Former Caloocan Mayor Macario "Boy" Asistio was rushed to the hospital Monday due to an apparent case of sleep apnea.

"Nakita ko siya itim na, halos hindi na siya makahinga. So dinala namin [sa ospital] just to make sure it wasn't a stroke, because it leads to that pala," Asistio's wife, former actress Nadia Montenegro, told ABS-CBN News on Tuesday.

According to Montenegro, Asistio is now in stable condition but will still undergo several tests. "So far, mino-monitor 'yung heart niya, but he's doing okay," she said.

Although there is no diagnosis on Asistio's condition, Montenegro said initial tests point to sleep apnea.

"He never had that before, but yesterday he had one of the worst attacks, because parang mga three or four minutes na walang oxygen," she said.

The former actress added that they have been advised by doctors to help prevent Asistio from getting stressed.

"Lahat bantay sarado, bawal na ma-stress," she said. "Hindi na niya pwedeng gawin 'yung mga dati niyang ginagawa. He doesn't smoke, but he's been living a very hectic lifestyle, and after the elections, of course, emotionally..."

Asistio lost his mayoralty bid in Caloocan in the recent mid-term elections.
