MANILA – The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) has dismissed two cadet officers of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) from the university for their alleged involvement in a hazing incident earlier this year.

PUP's Public Information Office said the university board has found cadet officers Daniel Tuico and Liezel Ariston guilty of beating up a freshman student.

Institute of Technology (IT) student "Sheena," 18, earlier said the two ROTC cadet officers repeatedly hit her on the hand and legs last January 16 as punishment for her failure to attend the briefing night of applicants for the university's Cadet Officers Candidate Course.

The beating, which happened inside the ROTC office, caused severe bruises on the back of her thighs.

Because of the alleged incident, several groups renewed their call for the abolition of the ROTC program. – report from Noel Alamar, dzMM
