MANILA, Philippines – Metro Manila has the worst air pollution in the country today, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Around 80% of the air pollution comes from vehicles while around 20% comes from factories, waste burning, and dust.
In its 2011 Anti-Smoke Belching Report, the DENR said only 15,920 of the 56,713 vehicles that underwent emission testing in Metro Manila passed the test.
DENR Assistant Sec. Corazon Davis and Interior and Local Government Secretary Jessie Robredo on Wenesday urged the public to be vigilant in checking the exhaust of their vehicles.
The Philippine Medical Association also warned the public that exposure to polluted air may cause sore throat, allergies, and even lung cancer. -- Report from Sol Aragones, ABS-CBN News
