Six days before he officially steps down as defense chief, Secretary Voltaire Gazmin was honored Friday by the Philippine Army with a brigade-size parading troops rendering a testimonial review in his honor.

In his speech, Philippine Army Chief Lt. Gen. Eduardo Ano thanked Gazmin for his 48 years of outstanding service for the country as a military officer and public servant.

Ano credited Gazmin for the capability upgrade and modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines as well as better equipment and training for our soldiers.

Ano credited Gazmin for the expansion of roles of the country's defense service from a purely military role to other meaningful endeavors such as peace building, institutional transformation, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.

For his part, Gazmin said his experience with the Army made him what he is today as he recalled his many exploits, adventures and sacrifices starting from being a junior officer, Presidential Security Guard (PSG) commander and becoming the 40th commanding General of the Philippine Army.

He said that in his stint as secretary of National Defense for the past six years, he was able to help in the modernization and capability upgrade of the Philippine Army.
