BANGKOK, Thailand - Philippine President Benigno Aquino III on Friday formally received his Honorary Doctorate Degree in Economics from Kasetsart University, a Thai state university.
This is Aquino's third after receiving an honorary Doctorate in Laws from the University of the Philippines and Universitas Pelita Harapan in Indonesia.
According to the press release issued by Kasetsart, the degree was conferred for having done a " lot of things in the area of the economy" when he was still in the House of Representatives and for his "policy of focusing on the economy for the well being of the Filipino people" when he became President in June 2010.
The University added the degree was given because of the President's economic skills of maintaining the Philippine economy at stable position despite the global economic downturn in 2010, along with enhancing the well being of the Filipino people.
Professor Vudtechai Kapilakanchana of Kasetsart University said that it is the first time that their university gave the doctorate degree to a president in Asia.
Kasetsart University, which means agriculture, was established in 1943 as a pioneer school of agriculture. The university courses were later expanded to other fields of learning except doctor for medical doctor.
Kapilakanchana also made mention that their university has been in close relation and coordination with the University of the Philippines in Los Banos, Laguna, the only university in the Philippines recognized by Thailand's Ministry of Education.
