Filipino-Canadian artists are proudly displaying their creativity, starting with the the “Mix-Mix (Anything is Possible)” art and painting exhibit at the recent Pinoy festival.

"This is somewhat new to them because they usually see only paintings in exhibits," he said. "That’s where the idea came from, for us to show to Canada that there’s another dimension or another medium of art out there."

Visual effects artist Jo Ann Cordero Belen said she was already a painter before she started working in films.

Among her work that was displayed at the event is her recent portrait painting of her mother.

"The only topic that I could think of is to honor teachers and mothers as a career," said Belen, "their dedication to their craft and also juggling between family at the same time."

Another surprising talent at the Mix-Mix exhibit is Rufino Orlando Dugay, a retired mechanic.

Graphic artist and animator Norman Belen initially only wanted to create a digital painting of the popular Filipino superhero “Darna” for the art exhibit.

But his wife Jo Ann convinced him to add other well-known homegrown superheroes which, as it turned out, were all created by Filipino comic book cartoonist Mars Ravelo.

The exhibit featured Cunanan’s paintings in oil, charcoal and pastel as well as 12 of his Dahong Pilipino cover art.

Fil-Canadian lawmaker Mable Elmore said the solo exhibit shows how far Cunanan has come in his journey as an artist.

Consul General Arlene Magno lauded Cunanan’s artistry and described him as a pillar in the world of Filipino-Canadian artists.
