Angela Ken, Thea Astley lead cast of 9 Works Theatrical’s 'Once on This Island'

MANILA -- 9 Works Theatrical continues to mount shows that surprise theater aficionados as it reveals the cast for its upcoming September production of coming-of-age stage musical "Once on This Island" with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty.

The wait is over as the 15-year-old theater company gathered some of the best-known faces in the theater scene mixed with relatively new mainstream artists to compose the cast of "Once on This Island."

Angela Ken and Thea Astley alternate in the lead role of Ti Moune, the peasant girl who spends her days dreaming of a glamorous life, while Jef Flores and Sam Concepcion will alternate as Daniel, Ti Moune’s love interest.

Lani Ligot will play the the role of Mama Euralie, who believes Ti Moune got spared by the gods for a reason, while Raul Montessa and Noel Rayos alternate as Tonton Julian, the peasant farmer and adoptive father of Ti Moune.

Andrea Deveraux, the well-to-do fiancee of Daniel, will be played by Krystal Kane and Shanaia Gomez.

The gods are the forces of nature worshipped by the island’s peasants. They have taken a special interest in Ti Moune after hearing her prayers. They will be played by Lorenz Martinez as Papa Ge, the god of death, while Radha Cuadrado, best known as an original member of the Filipino-Canadian hip-hop group Kulay, makes her theater comeback as Asaka, the goddess of the Earth.

Fresh from his "Rent" stint, Garrett Bolden takes on the role of the playful and malicious, god of water, Agwe. The iconic role of Lea Salonga in the Broadway revival of the musical, Erzulie, the goddess of Love, will have Shiela Valderrama-Martinez and Jasmine Fitzgerald alternating for the role.

PJ Rebullida plays Armand Beauxhomme, and the young Ti Mounes are Bianca Pauline Estacio and Adriana Reese Iso.

Cast as the storytellers are Jordan Andrews, Fay Castro, Sam Libao, and Jonjon Martin.

The production will run from September 6 to 29 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, in Makati City, and Robbie Guevara will direct and Mio Infante as its scenographer in this production based on the 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy, a Caribbean-set re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Little Mermaid."
