MANILA — A psychiatrist on Friday offered advice to parents following social media platform X's decision to allow adult and graphic content.

Elon Musk's X, formerly Twitter, updated their guidelines over the weekend, stating that "sexual expression, visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression."

According to psychiatrist Dra. Bernadette Manalo, parents should be more wary of their children's online activities, emphasizing that their brains are like "sponges" during that critical period.

"Alalahanin natin ang mga kabataan they're like sponges wherein kung anong nakikita nila susundin nila. Importante at a young age ang mga magulang ay andyan pa rin para sa kanila to filter everything. If it's bad then, dapat hindi pa panahon [para makita nila]," Mendoza said.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "early negative experiences in homes, schools, or digital spaces, such as exposure to violence... bullying and poverty, increase the risk of mental illness."

Under X's new policy, adult content will be prohibited for users identified as children.

One suggestion Mendoza mentioned was putting computers at a common area in the house to easily monitor children's online activities.

"Ang importante siguro ang ating mga laptops nasa labas ng kuwarto, ibig sabihin it's in a general place where people come and go para ang mga kabataan walang sikreto... Hindi naman sa pagiging usyoso," the psychiatrist said.

However, Mendoza said that parents should be able to trust their children, and that would happen if they raised them with the right sets of "values."

"Importante sa 'kin ang mga kabataan mabigyan ng guidance. Kahit papaano, ang setting up of values," she said.

Mendoza added that parents should determine the "proper time and place" to expose children to certain content.

On Wednesday, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DITC) said the latest X policy underscores the importance of having a law that will give the agency more powers to regulate social media.

DICT has been pushing for regulation of social media instead of an outright ban of platforms, including video-sharing platform TikTok.
