MANILA — Tokyo-based international department store chain Mitsukoshi is bringing more Japanese products to its first Philippines branch in the coming months.

Mitsukoshi Bonifacio Global City is expected to begin sales of anmitsu, a traditional Japanese summer dessert popular in many restaurants in the East Asian country, in the last week of July, the retailer said.

The scrumptious Japanese dessert anmitsu — which can be likened to Filipinos' summer favorite halo-halo —  is made with translucent jelly, red bean paste, boiled peas, and various fruits such as sliced peaches and cherries. Mitsukoshi's anmitsu is supplied by the confectionery firm Eitaro Sohonpo and will retail at P450.

More spirits will also hit Mitsukoshi BGC's shelves with the arrival of additional Japanese rice wines.

Kakurei Junmai Ginjo, a middle body and dry flavored sake with muscat and melon aroma, will retail at P1,980 beginning in early August. Meanwhile, fruity sake Gangi Junmai Dai Ginjo Yunagi, which has a melon-pear aroma, is priced at P2,980 and will also begin sales in early August.

Momoko Umemura, manager at Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd.’s corporate real estate department, said Mitsukoshi BGC now hosts 38 purely Japanese brands, 15 of which had been launched recently, including the Japan furniture seller Nitori.

"Mitsukoshi BGC is becoming one of the starting points for Japanese companies to start their business in the Philippines," she said.

Mitsukoshi BGC also offers popular Japanese beauty products, fashion apparel, and lifestyle products from local and international brands.

To bring Mitsukoshi — one of the oldest mall chains in Japan —  to the Philippines, Federal Land partnered with Nomura Real Estate Development and Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd. Mitsukoshi BGC soft-launched in 2022 and began full operations the following year.

"There are a lot of things to look forward to, a lot of products that will come soon to the shores of Mitsukoshi BGC," Federal Land head of commercial business group Charmaine Bauzon said.

"Mitsukoshi continues to collaborate with our Filipino retailers as well and, who knows, hopefully, [through] reciprocity we bring those products here to Japan," she said.
