MANILA -- In recent months, a new fashion craze has swept through the Philippines, captivating both the youth and the young at heart.

The trend? Duck hair clips.

From simple yellow ducklings to intricately designed clips with umbrellas and hearts, and some even wearing sunglasses, these accessories have become a must-have item for fashion-forward individuals across the country.

The origins of the hair clip trend can be traced back to China in 2015, where it first gained traction. However, it wasn't ducks that adorned heads but rather bean sprouts or small plants.

In the Philippines, it first gained popularity in Baguio City in 2023 before spreading like wildfire nationwide.

“Parang ma-OP (out of place) ka kapag hindi ka sumunod e, kaya iyan napag-tripan na rin namin,” said Jaja De Guzman.

“Tapos kasi umaalog-alog siya, parang ang cute-cute tingnan!” said Timmy de Quiros.

The duck hair clip fashion trend is also popular among the young at heart.

“Nakakabata siya! May bibe na ba ang lahat?” said Anna Cortez.

“Okay, bagay pala sa seniors!” said Wanda Mabini.

The popularity of duck hair clips has not only delighted fashion enthusiasts but also boosted the livelihoods of vendors across the country.

In marketplaces like Divisoria and Binondo in Manila, vendors sell duck clips for P35 each, with discounts for buying in bulk.

“Sana hindi siya malaos para tuloy-tuloy 'yung pagbebenta… Hindi ka taga-Pilipinas kung wala kang bibe!” said JM Del Rosario, who sells duck clips in Binondo.

While trends come and go, the duck hair clip trend shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

As the trend continues to evolve, one thing is certain: the humble duck has never looked so stylish.
