Britain's ugliest dog who starred alongside Hollywood A-listers in "Deadpool & Wolverine" has been nominated for a FIDO award, perhaps the nearest thing to a canine Oscar, organizers announced on Sunday (October 20).

Peggy the pugese – a five-year-old pug and Chinese crested cross – has been recognised for her film debut as "Dogpool", alongside Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.

But becoming a movie star and being nominated for a movie award hasn't changed her, according to her owner Luke Middleton who comes from Yorkshire in northern England.

"Same old Peggy, she loves to have a little cuddle on the sofa, and you know she enjoys meeting people and people enjoying meeting her - just takes it all in her stride really," he said.

Organisers say this year's awards have been especially blessed with stand-out dog performances on film to choose from.

"We have the biggest ever selection of dogs on the big screen. It's quite phenomenal and some amazing standout performances," said FIDO awards founder film journalist Toby Rose.

Other performances on the FIDOS (For Incredible Dogs On Screen) long list, announced in London on Sunday (October 20), include the red husky from the comedy horror "Nightbitch" in which Amy Adams' character adopts canine traits.

The FIDOS awards will take place in London on February 23, 2025.
